Chance Theater has announced its 2020 season, featuring many shows making their Orange County premieres.
The season will begin with the musical Fun Home (Jan. 31-March 1, 2020), by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori. The Tony-winning show follows the life of Alison Bechdel as she uncovers the secrets of her late father. Marya Mazor will direct.
Next up will be The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity (April 10-May 10) by Kristoffer Diaz. The play follows a Latinx wrestler pressured to play into ethnic stereotypes when he faces an Indian opponent. Jeremy Aluma will direct.
The season will continue with Yellowman (April 24-May 24) by Dael Orlandersmith. The play, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, explores the life of a small town African American woman whose fate becomes tragically intertwined with a light-skinned man. Oanh Nguyen will direct.
Following will be Billy Elliot The Musical (June 19-July 19), by Lee Hall and Elton John, the story of a boy from an English mining town who dreams of being a ballet dancer. Kari Hayter will direct.
Next will Joshua Harmon‘s Significant Other (Sept. 18-Oct. 18), about a young man looking for love who finds himself wrapped up in bachelorette parties. Matthew McCray will direct.
The season will conclude with Little Women (Nov. 27-Dec. 27), a musical adapted by Alan Knee from Louisa May Alcott, with music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein. The classic story follows the four March sisters as they come of age in Civil War-era Massachusetts. Casey Long will direct.
Throughout the season, Chance Theater will also feature two works for young audiences: The first will be A Wrinkle in Time (Feb. 14-March 1), adapted by John Glore from Madeleine L’Engle, the story of two misfit siblings transported through time and space to search for their father. Darryl B. Hovis will direct. The second family show will be Fancy Nancy The Musical by Susan DiLallo and Danny Abosch, adapted from the book series by Jane O’Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser. The story of five friends in a school play returns to Chance for the fifth time, directed and choreographed by Kelly Todd.
Chance Theater is an ensemble-driven company that promotes dialogue and connection within the Southern California theatrical landscape.
