Matthew McCray has directed for Center Theatre Group, LA Philharmonic, South Coast Repertory, Deaf West Theatre, Chance Theater, Rogue Machine, Semele Projects, among others. Directing awards and nominations include LA Drama Critics Circle, Stage Raw, Ovations, Scenies, and Sage. Recent Chance credits include Such Small Hands (OCTG Award for Projection Design and OCTG nomination for Direction), Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Rent, Next to Normal (OCTG nomination for Direction). He’s helmed projects headlined by Vanessa Williams and Bob Weir, and has received grants from EST/Sloan Science and Technology, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and CCI/Durfee ARC. For his work as both an independent director and as the Producing Artistic Director of LA’s award-winning theatre company Semele Projects (20+ seasons), KCRW said, “[McCray] distinguishes himself as one of the most plugged-in theatre makers in LA.” He is currently developing a verbatim play about Russia’s war in Ukraine. Performance credits include work at REDCAT, Disney, REPRISE!, Overtone Industries, and the TV shows Parenthood, New Girl, Will & Grace, Boston Legal, among others.
