Meet Laura Hathaway (Balladeer)lhathaway

Why do you think the world has been so fascinated with the legend of the Loch Ness Monster?
We are always fascinated by questions with no definitive answers. Since there is a sliver of credibility to the tale (an ancient Sea Serpent COULD have gotten caught in the Loch after the last ice age), it makes it more believable. Because there is a little seed of truth, a huge legend can grow.

What is it like to work on a world premiere musical?
It’s amazing! Usually when you do a show, you have an idea of how it has been done before and that alters your choices. There is no precedent with this show so you can truly make every moment your own.

What mysteries or legends captivate your imagination?
I am drawn to tales about aliens and space. It seems likely that there is something else out there.

If you met any of the characters on the street, who would you share a pint with and who would make you turn and walk away? And why?
I would like to spend time with CJ, the Captain. She seems to have it together and could probably hold her liquor well.

Do you have a favorite moment in the play?
The very end of the show. I don’t want to give it away but, if you’re not crying, you have a heart of stone!

What’s the biggest challenge for you in this production?
I get the opportunity to help create Nessie as a puppeteer which is challenging. It takes a lot of people to make Nessie a living, breathing creature so we have to really listen to each other, watch each other, and be in the moment at all times. But the final product is pretty magical.

What do you connect to in this story?
Ultimately, it’s a story about finding strength inside yourself. It’s a very human story…that just happens to have a non-human in it.
